Description
Artistic inspiration for many indoor scenes in The Passion of the Christ was drawn in large measure from the magnificent paintings of Italian artist Caravaggio. Here, in the scene where Jesus washes his disciples? feet, the features that characterize Caravaggio's work are captured in photographic form: the strong contrasting lights and darks and the earthy realism of both setting and character. The scene beautifully illustrates the humility of Jesus. In a world that clamours with self-interest and ambition, Jesus showed by example that his kingdom operated on an entirely different principle. "The greatest among you must be a servant," he said. "Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted."
