Surrounded by magnificent, snow-capped mountains and native beech forests, the rustic town of Glenorchy nestles at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand. I was fascinated by the beautiful reflections of the surrounding mountains in the lake and was hoping for complete calm and mirror like reflections. While I waited for TSS Earnslaw to steam into the shot on its passage down the lake, I noticed the buffeting wind was creating some interesting replications of the colourful surrounding peaks and vegetation. As I stood mesmerised by the patterns, some swans sailed into view. I had planned a grander photograph - the iconic coal-fired steamship on Lake Wakatipu with mountain reflections. But a more subtle picture emerged. I love the simplicity and ethereal quality of this shot. Eventually the Earnslaw did arrive, but to me it had nowhere near the romance of a lone swan drifting in a lake of colourful reflections.
