Description
Polar bears congregate around Cape Churchill from mid-October, waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze over. When the ice becomes thick enough to withstand their weight, the bears disperse onto the frozen sea to prey upon seals. Polar bears are very persistent hunters. They will find an opening in the ice and wait patiently for seals to pop their heads up. On this day, the ice had begun to form, and the bears were beginning to venture out onto the frozen bay. From a helicopter I found this pair, both staring intently as they awaited their prey. Only one bear broke its gaze to look up at me while the other remained vigilant. This is the most important time of year for polar bears. The seals they catch and eat during this time will sustain them for months. I love the graphic simplicity of this shot and the way it conveys a sense of scale.
