In spite of its huge population, California still has many unspoiled locations along its magnificent coast. On this day, the waves here were mostly low and gentle on the sand. Occasionally however, a huge set smashed its way right into the rock walls. After I had set up for this shot, a man arrived with his wife and children. Seeing only the gently lapping waves, he ignored my shouted warnings about the big sets and proceeded to photograph his family on the rocks. Suddenly, while his back was turned, a massive breaker roared in from the sea sweeping his wife and kids into the water. Apart from a good drenching they all survived, but his wife certainly wasn’t happy! It showed that it pays to treat the ocean—and people’s warnings—with respect.
