Built for the film The Man From Snowy River, Craig’s Hut stood for years as one of the great icons of Victoria’s Alpine National Park. Here it is captured against a magnificent backdrop of sweeping purple ranges, a spectacular addition to the hilltop upon which it was constructed. But there is a great irony about this scene. Today’s actual high country cattlemen are denied access to these mountains because the ranges are now ‘protected’ within national parks. To me, this is a case of bureaucracy gone mad: those making the rules seem happy to perpetuate the cattlemen’s legends, whilst at the same time denying a living to their real descendants! Meanwhile, without enough people on staff, the national parks are being overrun by feral animals and bushfires. This very hut was destroyed by the terrible fires that swept through the high country in December 2006. (It has recently been replaced – by a less picturesque hut with a metal roof.) But the situation often makes me angry. When will we learn that such people as these cattlemen are among our greatest Australian assets?
