Description
Mimosa Rocks, on the Sapphire Coast of southern New South Wales, is a beach strewn with thousands of rocks, their age evident by their beautiful smooth surfaces. Seeing that some people had made small stacks of rocks, I decided to try my hand at a creative sculpture. With a firmly planted stone as the pivot point, I first placed a flat rock almost a metre wide. Then I selected increasingly smaller stones to balance on top. It was quite an exercise and I quickly photographed it before returning the stones to where they belonged.
We are often tasked with holding immense weight; trying to keep countless pressures aligned on the narrowest of foundations. “Balance” reminds us that true strength is not in mass, but in the precision of placement - the knowledge that everything can, for a glorious instant, find its perfect rest and create a beauty of its own.
